Your dairy operation
A few quick details so the estimate reflects your farm's real electricity use, not a generic average
You'll get the most accurate result with a recent electricity bill to hand. If you're not sure, leave the defaults below — they're typical UK agricultural values.
Where your farm's electricity goes
Scaled to your robot count and herd size
| Component | Annual kWh | % of load |
|---|---|---|
| Milking robots & compressors | 0 | 0% |
| Electric water heating (sanitation) | 0 | 0% |
| Barn ancillaries (LEDs, fans, scraping) | 0 | 0% |
| Milk cooling | 0 | 0% |
| Total annual consumption | 0 | 100% |

Energy self-sufficiency
How much of your farm's annual electricity comes from your own roof
How we calculated this
- Baseline load profile: a 2-robot, ~130-cow dairy typically uses around 35,000–44,000 kWh/yr — robots & compressors ~45%, sanitation water heating ~18%, barn ancillaries (LEDs, fans, scraping) ~25%, and milk cooling with a plate cooler ~12%. Your figures scale this proportionally to your robot count and herd size.
- Solar generation: – kWh/yr, based on – kWp at – kWh/kWp (your region × array location)
- Self-consumption: –% of generation used on-site in year 1 — higher than a typical home, since robots, cooling and ancillaries draw power around the clock
- Plate cooler: if you don't yet have one, milk cooling electricity is modelled around 70% higher, reflecting the extra refrigeration load
- Export rate: –p/kWh for remaining generation exported under SEG
- Battery adds: shifts a further ~32 percentage points of generation from export to self-use, particularly useful given robots run milkings overnight as well as by day
- Smart tariff bonus: off-peak arbitrage plus a premium export rate, modelled at roughly £150–600/yr depending on system size
- Price rise assumption: –%/yr, compounded over 25 years
- Panel degradation: 0.5%/yr efficiency loss built into every projection
- This calculator does not show installation costs — that depends on your specific roof, supply capacity and system, and needs a proper site survey.
